THE ORIGINS OF THE SEA

One day, we were on a educational fishing trip. At the moment
the fisherman got his catch, together with the nets were quite a
lot of garbage. We were shocked to watch the fisherman throw
them back in the sea. This is when, we had the idea to create a
system, so as to collect, store and recycle these garbage.

THE PILOT PROJECT

We created a pilot with fishing boats in May 2018. We equipped the boats with bins for litter, and were surprised to see that in this way, through passive fishing, each fishing boat was collecting 100-150 kilos of litter per week, litter that was lying
50-500 meters deep in the sea, varying from bottles, cans,
ghost nets to parts of cars and airplanes.

THE BEGINNING OF REFRESH

Currently, through the support of our partner and investor A.
Laskaridis Foundation, we launched the project with 10 fishing
boats, and we have the capacity to clean 1 ton of garbage per
week from the sea. Greece has 250 fishing boats using this
fishing technique (small trawlers), and we expect to
collaborate with 100 fishing boats in the next 3 years, which will
give us the capacity to clean 10 tons of garbage per week from
the sea.

THE FUTURE OF REFRESH

At the same time, we try to create partnerships to recycle and
upcycle the garbage, so as to be able to create a sustainable
and self funded business model. Our first partnership has
already been made towards this direction, with an organization
named HealthySeas, which collects the ghost nets and creates
various products.

This year, we expect to collect and recycle 30 tons of litter from
the sea. We plan to find ways to create products, such as
bracelets, out of these material.
